What is this bag ban proposal?

The San Luis Obispo County Integrated Waste Management Authority – comprised of one elected official from each city and all members of the Board of Supervisors – will soon consider a new ordinance further burdening families and small businesses. The proposed ordinance would make it a crime for stores to provide free traditional plastic bags to customers at the point of sale. And to give out a paper bag, stores will have to charge a fee. This means you will have to bring bags each and every trip for all your purchases… or purchase bags. That’s a lot of bags to bring for a big Thanksgiving shopping trip.

Bad policy for San Luis Obispo

Simply put, this proposal will increase grocery costs for families and businesses, cede local control from cities and the county to one obscure regional governing body, weaken the recycling infrastructure, increase retail theft, and mandate jail time and strict fines for business violators. What's more, it's just not necessary-- California law already requires all large grocery stores and pharmacies to provide a recycling bin for plastic bags and plastic bag recycling is at an all time high.
